Paid sick leave proposal dead in Allegheny County Council

PITTSBURGH — A proposal for paid sick leave is dead in the Allegheny County Council.

An attempt to override county executive Rich Fitzgerald’s veto lost by one vote Tuesday night.

The Paid Sick Days Act, legislation requiring Allegheny County businesses to provide paid sick leave to employees, was vetoed in mid-March by Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald. It had been passed by County Council on March 9, but Fitzgerald said it should go through the health department instead of council.

The Paid Sick Days Act would apply to businesses with more than 25 employees. It would require them to provide an hour of paid sick time for every 35 hours worked.

Another topic on the table for Tuesday night’s council meeting was establishing an independent police review board that would review misconduct allegations against county officers. Council will have a discussion about it, and a public hearing is expected to be scheduled for April.

Also on the agenda was the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s desire to toll a bridge on Interstate 79 in Bridgeville. It’s one of nine bridges in the state that PennDOT is looking to add tolls to.

PennDOT said it isn’t getting the needed funds from the state’s gas tax, so it needs the toll money for rehabilitation projects.
