Parkway East narrowing to 1 lane for weekend construction project

PITTSBURGH — Inclement weather has changed PennDOT’s plans for a construction project in Pittsburgh this weekend, and motorists are going to feel the impact.

Beginning at 10 p.m. Friday night, the eastbound Parkway East will be narrowed to one lane from the Fort Pitt Bridge to the Birmingham Bridge.

"They can't pave in the rain," said PennDOT spokesman Steve Cowan. "Even if they thought it wasn't going to rain the entire weekend, the contractor didn't want to take the risk of milling off and not be able to finish the paving before Monday morning rush hour."

Several ramps connected to the Parkway East in that area will also be closed, including the Stanwix and Market street on-ramps and the Fort Duquesne ramp to eastbound Interstate 376.
