Will high school sports pick back up in the fall? PIAA to discuss plans to restart

PITTSBURGH — What impact will the coronavirus have on area high school sports? Is it safe to play? These are questions officials are working to answer and address, but the bottom line is they will follow Gov. Tom Wolf’s orders.

The PIAA board of directors is set to sit down and talk about restarting sports Wednesday, according to our news partners at TribLIVE.

Executive Director Bob Lombardi told TribLIVE that he expects high school sports to be played in the fall, and they would like to possibly begin conditioning in the summer.

“I’m cautiously optimistic that school and our (athletics) program is going to start on time. Especially in the last 10 days, because you’ve seen some of the changes. Our neighbor New Jersey is opening up beaches. That’s huge,” Lombardi told TribLIVE.

The Lombardi said they’ll have a group of people with a lot of experience in athletics talking about balance, fairness and opening up standards.
