Pitt cancels football practice after several players show COVID-19 symptoms

PITTSBURGH — The University of Pittsburgh canceled its football training camp practice Thursday after officials said several student-athletes showed “symptoms that can be associated with COVID-19.”

In a release, Pitt said the university’s medical team decided to pause training camp activities so those symptomatic players could be tested for the coronavirus.

Luckily, officials said there were no positive test results that came from those several players.

Based on that, Pitt’s football team will be back out on the field for training camp on Friday. The Panthers opened camp on Aug. 7 and have held five practices so far.

“Our medical team decided it was in everyone’s best interest to temporarily pause our Thursday training camp activities so that we could test symptomatic players per our protocol,” Director of Athletics Heather Lyke said in the release. “Based on negative test results received late today, it has been determined that we can safely resume practice on Friday.”

The University of Pittsburgh has not announced that any of its student-athletes or coaches have tested positive for COVID-19 to this date.
