Pittsburgh council passes citywide eviction ban

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh City Council voted to move forward with a citywide temporary ban on evictions.

According to our partners at TribLive.com, the legislation passed unanimously after extensive discussion among council members. The discussion at times focused on whether the law can be enforced.

Councilwoman Deb Gross said the ban will only be in place as long as the city-declared pandemic emergency is in place. This latest extension runs through March 16, nearly a year since city leaders declared the emergency. She said 120 households have entered the eviction process since last week on top of 180 already in the system and 250 cases that are docketed.

The idea was to provide a ban on evicting people who are struggling financially due to the pandemic.
