Pittsburgh making changes to improve road treatment during snow

PITTSBURGH — The city of Pittsburgh is making changes to improve its response and treatment of streets during snowy and inclement weather.

After the last snowfall on Christmas, many people were frustrated with road conditions. Channel 11 got several calls into the newsroom about treacherous driving.

Brookline Boulevard in the city’s Brookline neighborhood, for example, was a mess after that snowstorm.

Three days after the snow fell, people living in areas such as Brookline and Carrick were still dealing with slush and ice on their streets.

The city said it can do better.

Communication improvements are among changes being made. The city plans to use a new mass texting and robocall system to get drivers into plow and salt trucks, then onto the streets.

Working out kinks with the city’s snow plow tracker is also on the list of changes.

Officials are also looking at properly distributing salt after the Department of Public Works identified that some streets received inadequate amounts during the last snowfall.
