Pittsburgh will see 2 full moons in October: Harvest Moon on Thursday, rare blue moon on Halloween

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh area will get to enjoy the first of two full moons this month Thursday.

The Harvest Moon will peak at 5:05 p.m. Thursday with what should be a stunning moon rise just after sunset.  Even if skies aren’t clear in your area, you’ll get several great peeks between the clouds this season. The Harvest Moon is traditionally the first full moon of autumn.

A second full moon, the Hunter’s Moon, will be visible Halloween night. The second full moon of the same month is often referred to as a “blue moon” although the color blue has nothing to do with it.  The last blue moon on Halloween across the entire United States was in 1944.
