Police issue warning after thieves target mailboxes, steal checks

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Police in Moon Township are warning residents that thieves are snatching outgoing checks from mailboxes.

“Over the past couple of months, we’ve gotten several complaints,” said Moon Township Police Department Chief Greg Seamon.

Seamon said that having the flag raised on your mailbox can serve as a signal to crooks.

After snatching your check, the thieves either alter and cash them, or use your routing and account numbers to create new phony checks.

Seamon said several other municipalities are seeing the same thing, and the United States Postal Inspection Service has been contacted. It’s believed the scheme is predominantly run by groups of out-of-towners.

Investigations are ongoing and charges are forthcoming, he said.

As an alternative, Seamon suggests going to either the post office or a USPS blue collection box to send checks or other sensitive mail.
