Police: Man arrested for DUI after leading officers on chase on South Busway

PITTSBURGH — A police chase Saturday ended in a crash that temporarily closed a section of the busway in the South Hills.

The vehicle was being pursued on the South Busway by Port Authority of Allegheny County police and ended up on its roof near Glenbury Street in Pittsburgh's Overbrook neighborhood around 7 p.m., a Port Authority spokesman said.

According to court documents, police saw the driver turning onto the busway and pulled him over. As an officer was approaching teh vehicle, the driver took off.

"I continued pursuit of the vehicle due to suspicion of driving under the influence and the immediate danger of bus patrons, who may have been at the bus stops with a vehicle traveling at an accelerated speed without its headlights on along the busway," an officer reported in the criminal complaint.

Police said the driver crashed, but then tried to run away. When officers caught him he reportedly said "I made a big mistake."

Buses were temporarily redirected to the busway access point at Whited Street, the spokesman said. The busway reopened just before 8 p.m.

The driver of the vehicle, Terry Diggs, 47, is facing several charges including driving under the influence, fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, driving while operating privilege is suspended and more.

Police said they discovered five opened beer cans in the vehicle.
