Pop-up park coming to Pittsburgh’s Cultural District

PITTSBURGH — Two lanes of Ft. Duquesne Boulevard will be transformed into a pop-up park by Monday, and it will stay that way until the first week of October.

Don’t worry, you won’t see any traffic or backups. Instead, you’ll see people eating, live music, and enjoying the new space to be called Allegheny Overlook. The best part? It’s steps from downtown.

The Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership and the city are behind the transformation, and the goal is to get people downtown to shop and eat locally after a devastating year for businesses.

Tyrone Turner, who works at Joe & Pie Cafe, says it could make a huge difference.

“A lot of businesses have been missing out on money, our business has been filing for a lot of grants to get more business so that’s good to hear that they’re bringing more people down and we can all make more money,” Turner described.

A spokesperson for the city said that the park will be COVID-19 friendly with plenty of space and activities.

Downtown employees, like Turner, hope people stop in their business while visiting the new park.

“It will be good to see a lot of people walking outside again and different new faces coming around. We have a lot of repeating customers and we want to see new people come in,” Turner said.
