Pop-up park planned for Downtown Pittsburgh to bring people into city center

PITTSBURGH — A pop-up park is being planned to set up in the middle of Fort Duquesne Boulevard and will include food, drinks, art and music. It’s a project leaders hope will re-energize Downtown Pittsburgh.

“We shut down, then opened up, then shut down again. It’s been really hard for all the workers in Market Square,” said Ashton Williams, manager of Las Velas.

The Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership says change is on the way, unveiling a long list of initiatives they hope will revive and bring people back to the city center. The plans include using more minority-owned businesses, adding the pop-up park and other projects like farmers’ markets, yoga, live music and the return of Light Up Night.

Williams hopes these plans work after such a rocky year.

“I’m just happy things are turning around,” she said. “We feel blessed honestly because we can now make ends meet.”

The Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre is also getting performances up and running again just blocks away.
