'Roach infestation’ at local grocery store prompts consumer alert

PITTSBURGH — The Allegheny County Health Department has issued a consumer alert for Desi Market on Brownsville Road in Pittsburgh’s Carrick neighborhood because of a roach infestation and other food safety concerns.

“All stages of roach development found throughout the meat department of the facility, in the unsealed grain storage area, and the non-refrigerated produce shelving on glue boards,” the report said.

"Live and active” roaches were found under the meat department cutting boards, butcher blocks, inside an unused band saw, under and inside the meat display coolers, inside a makeshift wall, and on glue boards between shelving units that have raw produce, according to the report.

The report also said fish from unknown sources was being sold. The band saws and cutting boards in the meat department were stored and covered with raw meat “debris,” according to the report.

The store owner gave Channel 11 a walk-through and said they are working on fixing all of the violations from the health department. Health department officials will go back and reinspect in 10 days.

If they don’t fix the violations, they could fined or shut down.
