Scammers are spoofing a Pittsburgh police station’s phone number

PITTSBURGH — Scammers are spoofing a phone number that appears to be from the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police’s Zone 6 station.

Pittsburgh police alerted the public to the scam on Tuesday in a Facebook post.

The caller often poses as a Zone 6 detective, claiming the person they call is being investigated for a crime, police said in the post. They then demand payments and gift cards to settle warrants or charges that don’t exist.

“Pittsburgh Bureau of Police would like to remind everyone we will never ask for people to pay warrants and fines over the phone. If you receive one of these calls, please hang up and contact police directly,” the Facebook post stated.
