Several people held hostage inside Pittsburgh home

PITTSBURGH — A man was arrested after he held several people hostage Thursday night inside a home in Pittsburgh’s Hazelwood neighborhood, police said.

Police were called shortly after 11:30 p.m. to the Glenwood Avenue home, where officers found the man, 35-year-old Allen McCarthy, unarmed with three women, authorities said. Two men were able to escape from the home.

Negotiations with police led to McCarthy’s surrender, officials said. He was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

One of the women suffered an injury during an altercation before police arrived, authorities said. She was taken to a hospital for treatment.

The news unfortunately doesn't surprise homeowners on the block.

"You hear those gunshots at night," said Hazelwood resident Dewine Wainright.

Wainwright and his neighbors do their part to keep up part of Glenwood Avenue.

"Mainly just keeping it clean, keeping it safe. Just watching out for the kids," Wainwright said.

The owner of the home where the incident happened told only Channel 11 that he works at a shelter and took in a couple of people who had nowhere to go.

One of those people, he said, was on drugs and lost control.

McCarthy faces charges of false imprisonment, aggravated assault, criminal mischief and recklessly endangering another person. He also faces drug-related charges.
