Sheraden residents worry only grocery store within walking distance won’t reopen

PITTSBURGH — Neighbors in Sheraden said a store they depend on for their essentials has been closed for three weeks, and they worry it won’t reopen.

It’s the only grocery store that is easily accessible for many families in the community.

“You don’t realize how important that store is to elderly individuals like I am myself,” said Gary Allen Sr.

We reached out to Councilwoman Theresa Kail Smith and the store’s manager. They tell Channel 11 a Family Dollar delivery truck hit an electric meter at the end of July, wiping out the power to the store, which now requires repairs.

An employee who didn’t want to risk her job said the community is losing out, but they’re working in the dark to get the store ready to reopen.

The store manager said they will reopen, but she just doesn’t know when. We reached out to the Family Dollar Corporation but have not heard back.
