Study: One in nine college students raped since entering college

PITTSBURGH — University of Pittsburgh students and school officials are responding to a recent report released by the Association of American Universities that detailed the rate of sexual assault and misconduct at Pitt and more than 30 universities.

The study found that one in nine university students had been raped since entering college and that one in six were touched sexually against his or her will.

The majority of those assaults were committed by someone the victim already knew, the study said.

The numbers at Pitt, which are similar to what was found at the other universities, are discouraging to school leaders. Katie Pope, associate vice chancellor of civil rights and Title IX, said the school has developed a three-pronged approach in response to the report.

Part of the plan will be to create evidence-based practices -- applying solutions to the findings from research on sexual misconduct -- and and provide more information and materials to educate the faculty and student body.

Pope said the other part of their initiative involves more funding for evidence-based research on preventing sexual misconduct.
