At first, it seemed like a normal night at Walmart. Shoppers are seen pushing carts around the store on July 5, but then things quickly change once a woman, identified as Rojanai Alston, rounds the corner to an aisle.

Two people on motorized carts move closer to her and two women approach her from behind, video shows.

A brawl breaks out, spilling into another aisle. Eventually, the video shows Alston pull out a gun and fire, walking down another aisle as the crowd disperses.

The question now at the center of the case is, was this self-defense?

“Her issue is going to become -- after those three persons were beating on this woman and she obtained her weapon and she was pointing it -- they had retreated. So the issue becomes retreat and the victim then becomes the alleged aggressor," said legal expert Phil DiLucente.

DiLucente said that in Pennsylvania, it's only considered self-defense if someone felt they were otherwise going to be seriously hurt or killed.

"That’s what the jury will ultimately decide, whether their retreating was sufficient where this person didn’t feel that serious bodily injury or death would be imminent," DiLucente said.

Alston did reportedly have a concealed carry permit.

She appeared before a judge Thursday. The attempted homicide charge she was facing was dropped, but she will still stand trial on an aggravated assault charge.
