Suspect named in shooting death of Pittsburgh honor roll student

PITTSBURGH — Police still have no motive in the shooting death of star student Rashawn Gibson, but there is a warrant out for the teen who police say pulled the trigger.

Channel 11 was in Sheraden the afternoon and evening of the murder last December, and police questioned Emere Mason, 18, of Sheraden along with several other teens, but no one was named a suspect.

Now, 11 months later, police say a witness corroborated surveillance video which recorded the gunshots, and other witnesses say they saw Mason and Gibson, 17, get into an argument when Mason pulled out a gun and fired.

Gibson, an honor roll student, was shot twice and left to die on a porch at a house on Glen Mawr Avenue.

“The neighbors told us he was laying in the window,” said Emmett Dalton, who moved into that house six months later.

“It was a shocker. We probably wouldn't have moved here had we known that had happened around here .”

Dalton told Channel 11 a makeshift memorial to Gibson was there when he moved in. It’s a bit faded but he said Gibson’s family still stops by to mourn and pray.

“It would be nice to see justice served for the young man,” he said.
