Target 11 helps woman get second vaccine shot

For one woman, getting the second dose of her COVID-19 vaccine was coming down to the wire, until Target 11 stepped in to help her.

Cancer survivor Theresa Nightengale, who works in a medical office, said that she was able to get her first shot on Jan. 20 at Wilson’s Pharmacy. She was scheduled for her second shot on Feb. 17, but then the shortage hit and she was unable to get in for her second within the 42-day window, which ended today. The pharmacy told her they didn’t have the supply.

“I was getting nervous...42 days...and it depends on where you look online. Some say 42 some say you have to hit the dot,” she said. “I came there on the 17th. They were out because of the snowstorm that happened that was understandable, things happen. They told me they would put me on list.”

But Nightengale says every time she reached out to the pharmacy, she was told they didn’t have any doses. She even went to another pharmacy and stood in line but they refused to give her a second shot and told her she had to get it where she got the first shot.

Target 11 had been monitoring Nightingale’s predicament for about a week and when it became clear she might not meet the deadline one day before the 42 days were up, Target 11 reached out to the state Department of Health, who then immediately contacted the pharmacy.

“Since your inquiry, we have contacted the vaccine provider to ensure they have adequate supply to support second doses and further support the individual,” the Department of Health reported.

Nightingale finally got her second shot Tuesday afternoon.

“I appreciate that more than you can ever know. I was calling everyone I could think of, I was calling all these doctors offices,” she said. “I’m forever grateful.”

The pharmacy owner said he was hit hard by the shortage and he’s doing his best to get second doses out before the 42 day deadline.

The Department of Health are urging providers facing similar issues to reach out to them and they will make sure they get the second doses.
