‘True attack and invasion’: Local congressman fears security issues could continue in state capitals

Congressman Conor Lamb is issuing a stern warning, emphasizing his fears that state capitol buildings around the country may be the next target, after the U.S. Capitol was attacked on Jan. 6.

Lamb will attend President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration on Wednesday in Washington, the same site as the deadly riot.

But he’s not concerned about safety in the nation’s capital, where 25,000 National Guard troops are now on duty.

“By the time I get back there, the Capitol (will) probably be one of the safest places in America. I mean, there’s more troops than there are in Iraq and Afghanistan,” Lamb said.

In a one-on-one interview, Lamb said he’s more concerned about the possibility of attacks on state capitals like Harrisburg, where security has been increased as a precaution.

“We need to make sure frankly that we spread the resources around so that all of America is protected, every capitol, all the major cities where there’s been intelligence of different gatherings. I think what we may end up with is some of these violent groups targeting other places because they know the Capitol won’t be breached again,” Lamb said.

Lamb believes the deadly riot at the U.S. Capitol is only the beginning. He said it will take time to track down and bring those responsible to justice.

“That’s important for people to know, because that piece of the threat has not gone away yet, and we probably are only at the beginning of these people who think that they need to try to overthrow our government. And they will have to be brought down one by one over a long series of time. I mean it is a domestic terror threat, that’s what it is,” Lamb said.

Lamb said the inauguration on Wednesday will serve as a clear reminder that no matter the threat, democracy will prevail.
