Uber unveils 2nd generation of self-driving cars

Uber Advanced Technologies Group in Pittsburgh held an event for media today to give a 1-year-update on their self-driving pilot and introducing the second generation of vehicles.

Channel 11 was invited to take a look at Uber's new fleet and even take a demo ride.

The ride went smoothly, although some of the stops were a bit sudden and quite jarring. But, Uber said they are constantly perfecting their software and hardware.

The new generation of self-driving cars are white, have better cameras and sensors and an empty trunk where riders can put their bags.

"We've hit a million autonomous miles, we've had 30,000 trips," Eric Meyhofer, head of Uber ATG, said.

Uber's one year anniversary of the driverless car comes right after another company, Argo AI, announced this week that it was opening its headquarters in Pittsburgh.

Argo AI is a startup backed by Ford Motor Company to help design and develop its self-driving cars.

With those companies anchored in the city, Pittsburgh continues its status as a self-driving car leader.

Uber said on Tuesday that their technology is making it safer and safer.

"This million miles we've driven is really momentous for us and it indicates that a lot of progress is being made," Noah Zych, head of system safety at Uber AGT, said.
