Water creating icy mess, nuisance for Mt. Lebanon residents

MT. LEBANON, Pa. — Water trickling down a Mt. Lebanon street has led to chunks of ice forming and is preventing some residents from accessing their driveways.

Part of Richland Road is blocked off because of the water coming up from under the ground. People who live in that blocked-off area near Broadmoor Avenue are forced to park on the street because they can’t get in or out of their driveways.

“The street is treacherous. The ice does spill over onto the sidewalk into my driveway, so we have had to do our best at salting and trying to take care of that so nobody falls and gets hurt,” Tina Saucier-Goerk, who lives nearby, said.

Neighbors said Penn American Water crews have been out every few days to make repairs, but the water keeps flowing.

"It's disturbing, to say the least. There are big bright lights on, jackhammers running at two, three four o'clock in the morning," said a neighbor who did not want to be identified. "The hole in front of our house, when they bust up the concrete, it shakes up the house."

Channel 11 News found several spots on surrounding streets where water also appears to be coming up from the ground.

In addition to the ice, neighbors said another problem is that the roads are being torn up by crews looking for the leaks.

The public works department told Channel 11 there are multiple leaks in the area and crews have punched 12 or 13 holes in the ground trying to find them. They say it's a 100-year-old system and ultimately Penn American Water is responsible for fixing the leaks.
