Federal drug bust at California port nets more than 220 pounds of cocaine

Federal authorities seized more than 220 pounds of cocaine on two ships docked at a California port, the Los Angeles Times reported.

It was the largest drug bust in 25 years at the Port of Hueneme, located on California's central coast, the Ventura County Star reported. The cocaine was hidden aboard two cargo ships carrying produce from Central and South America, the newspaper reported.

The first load of drugs, weighing 204.2 pounds, was found Jan. 22 by U.S. Customs and Border Patrol officers who boarded a ship that had arrived from Ecuador, the Times reported. There were 80 bundles of the drug wrapped and hidden under the floorboards of the refrigerated ship, the newspaper reported.

On Jan. 28, a produce vessel from Guatemala contained 17.5 pounds of cocaine in its floorboards, the Star reported.

The Port of Hueneme is the largest deepwater port between San Francisco and Los Angeles, the newspaper reported.
