Firefighter, wanted for DUI manslaughter in death of wife, found dead at cemetery

YULEE, Fla. — The Nassau County Sheriff's Department said that Curtis Bollinger, 48, was found deceased Tuesday by deputies at a cemetery located at Live Oak Baptist Church in Callahan, Florida.

Deputies said he was found inside his vehicle with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Bollinger was wanted on an outstanding arrest warrant for DUI manslaughter issued by the Florida Highway Patrol in reference to a motorcycle crash that killed his wife Shannon in Nassau County, authorities said.

The retired firefighter from Nassau County had been wanted on a charge of DUI manslaughter in the death of his wife in April.

The Florida Highway Patrol said Curtis Bollinger had been under the influence the night he crashed on S.R. 200 with his wife, Shannon, on the back of his motorcycle.

Troopers said Shannon Bollinger died at the scene. Neither she nor her husband were wearing a helmet.

Shannon Bollinger was a mother of five children. Curtis was not the biological father.

Troopers said Curtis had a blood alcohol level of .2 percent, which is two-and-a-half times the legal limit.

The crash report said Curtis was traveling 19 mph when he lost control of the motorcycle and crashed into the concrete median.

An arrest warrant for Curtis was issued last Tuesday.

Curtis was a lieutenant with the Nassau County Fire Rescue. The fire department said he retired last Wednesday, a day after the arrest warrant was issued.
