Home for the holiday: Children of police officer killed on duty get free apartment by foundation

NEW YORK — They lost their mother after she was killed in the line of duty, but the children of Miosotis Familia now don’t have to worry about where they’re going to live.

Genesis Vilella, 20, and Peter and Delilah Vega, 12, were given a furnished, mortgage-free co-op apartment in the Riverdale section of the Bronx.

It was given to them by The Tunnel to Towers Foundation, WABC reported.

The foundation, which gives homes to the families of first responders who are killed, has raised more than $4 million since it was founded by the brothers of Stephen Stiller. He was a firefighter who died on 9/11, ABC News reported.

The Tunnel to Towers Foundation, the Daily News and Skyview Apartments LLC raised more than $800,000 to buy the three-bedroom apartment for Familia’s family.

Familia was shot and killed on July 4th. She was a single mother of three and was the first female NYPD officer killed in the line of duty since 9/11, WABC reported. Police said Alexander Bond shot Familia as she sat in a mobile command unit in the Bronx, ABC News reported.

Genesis, Peter and Delilah are expected to be in their new home by Christmas.
