In a move celebrated by animal activists, the iconic department store Macy's will no longer be selling fur by the end of the 2020 fiscal year.
By that deadline, products with fur will not be sold in Macy's, Bloomingdale stores, or any of the company's discount stores like Macy's Backstage and Bloomingdale's The Outlet, the company said in a press release.
The company will also close Macy's Fur Vaults and Bloomingdale's Maximilian fur salons, The New York Times reported.

But there will be some exceptions. Ethically sourced sheep fur and cattle fur will still be sold, CBS News reported.
Macy's isn't the first big-name retailer to move away from fur products.
Michael Kors and Gucci have stopped selling the controversial items, according to The New York Times.
California has banned the sale of fur in the state with the law taking effect in 2023. Hawaii and New York are also considering similar measures, CBS News reported.
The Humane Society of the United States has pushed Macy's for more than a decade to stop selling fur. The animal rights organization made the announcement with Macy's Monday, ABC News reported.

The Humane Society says more than 100 million animals are killed each year by the fur industry, the Humane Society said, according to CBS News.
