School assignment on sexual assault example of victim blaming, parents say

KENOSHA, Wis. — A Wisconsin high school administration is apologizing after parents complained about a controversial homework assignment on sexual assault.

The assignment was part of a health class at Bradford High School in Kenosha. Students watched a video and then were given a list of questions to answer, WISN reported.

A parent told WISN that the first question of the assignment read: "What could Melissa have done differently to have avoided her sexual assault?"

Outraged students and parents said the question amounted to victim blaming, WDJT reported.

Carmen Pitre, the president of Sojourner Family Peace Center, agreed. While Pitre applauded the school for discussing relationship violence, she told WITI that the focus of the question was misguided.

The Kenosha School District is investigating, and issued a statement to parents and students, which in part said, "It was not the intent of the district or our staff to offend any of our students, families or stakeholders and we apologize for the concern this may have caused."
