CHICAGO — With some help from above, state troopers seated in semitrucks worked to issue 20 citations to distracted drivers for cellphone violations, improper lane changes and not wearing a seat belt.
Illinois State Police officers in the "Trooper in a Truck" program work with the Illinois Trucking Association to get a higher vantage point to spot offenders then radio ahead to waiting patrol cars, WGN reported.
"As we've seen in the last 10 years, distracted driving in my opinion has overtaken alcohol," Master Sgt. Bryan Falat told WGN. "It's day and night that people are doing it, so many people are getting hurt so many people are dying because of it."
Troopers rolled out the program about a year ago.
