CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A teenager is facing an involuntary manslaughter charge after a 5-year-old girl was shot and killed in North Carolina, authorities said.

According to WSOC-TV, the shooting occurred shortly before 9:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Maple Run Apartments in Charlotte’s Hidden Valley neighborhood. Two teenagers, ages 14 and 15, were at the home when the child, Amani Barringer, suffered a gunshot wound, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said. The girl later died at a nearby hospital, officials said.

Authorities said Thursday that they have charged the 14-year-old with involuntary manslaughter, WSOC reported. An adult, whose name was not released to protect the teen’s identity, also is facing a charge of failing to secure a firearm, police said.
