NEW YORK — A 9-year-old girl was found dead over the weekend in her New York home with cuts to her head and bite marks.
The New York Times says the girl, later identified by police as Shalom Guifarro, was found in her home Sunday. Her mother, Shamaine Cato, 48, has been questioned by police stating that she had a history of domestic complaints, none of which involved Shalom.
Cato called 911 to report her daughter being in “distress,” according to the New York Times. The superintendent of the building Cato lived in with her daughter was called out around the same time reports were received of a stench by other tenants. First responders arrived at the scene and shortly after 1 p.m., Shalom was declared dead.
According to WNBC, witnesses told officers that Shalom and her sister are smart and respectful girls but their mother was known to be strict.
WNBC says the Administration for Children’s Protective Services is investigating along with the police. The Medical Examiner has not yet released the cause of death for Shalom.
