NEW YORK — A woman is in police custody after an abandoned newborn baby boy was discovered in New York’s Queens borough, authorities said.
According to WNBC, a resident found the hours-old infant, whose umbilical cord had not been removed, shortly after 10 a.m. Sunday when she heard him crying in an alley near her Ozone Park home. Emergency crews rushed the child to a nearby hospital, where he remains in critical condition, News 12 reported.
New York police have detained a 23-year-old woman, according to WNBC.
No further information was immediately available.
