Bison charges woman who approached calf

CUSTER STATE PARK, S.D. — A woman who got off a motorcycle and approached a calf was charged by a bison Wednesday in Custer State Park, officials said.

A 54-year-old woman from Iowa approached the calf around 6:39 p.m. in the park when the adult bison ran toward her and caught her belt with his horn, KOTA reported.

The bison tossed the woman onto her head before running away. She fell to the ground, and lost consciousness and was airlifted to a hospital with serious injuries.

Officials warned park visitors not to approach the wild animals.

“We would like to remind everyone to not pet the fluffy cows — also known as bison/buffalo. We have had calls about the fluffy cows blocking the road occasionally — some people are also getting too close,” the Custer County Sheriff said on social media. “Remember this is their park and we are the guests… Please give them a break and keep your distance.”
