Border agents seize more than 47 pounds of meth in Arizona

YUMA, Ariz. — Border Patrol agents with the U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Yuma sector seized more than 47 pounds of methamphetamine at an immigration checkpoint Saturday morning.

According to an agency news release, a U.S. Border Patrol canine detected an odor emanating from a 2006 Honda Civic with a single occupant.

Upon inspection, agents found 45 vacuum-sealed packages of methamphetamine, with an estimated street value of more than $157,000, in the vehicle’s rear quarter panels. Both the vehicle and the narcotics were seized.

The driver, a 26-year-old man with a Yuma address, carried paperwork confirming his Lawfully Admitted for Permanent Residence, or LAPR, designation.

According to the news release, LAPRs can legally be deported if they violate certain U.S. immigration laws and can be placed into removal proceedings if convicted of two separate crimes categorized as a “crime of moral turpitude,” or a single aggravated felony.
