Officers from the San Bernardino Police Department responded to a shooting shortly before midnight outside a hookah lounge in the city of Highland, located in San Bernardino County, KNBC-TV reported.

A large crowd had gathered outside the business, Sgt. Equino Thomas of the San Bernardino Police Department told the Los Angeles Times in an email.

“Upon arrival, officers encountered a large crowd and learned that they were in the area attending a party,” police said in a statement.

Shots reportedly were also fired across the street at a Mobil gas station, according to KTLA-TV.

”We just heard gunshots and a lot of kids running,” a witness, who did not want to be named, told the television station. “Most of the kids were under 18 years.”

Family members identified the person who died as a 20-year-old who was at the party, according to KTLA.

The motive for the shooting remains under investigation, according to The Sun of San Bernardino.

The eight wounded victims appeared to have injuries that were not life-threatening, Thomas told KTLA.

Officials said they believe the shooting, which stemmed from a conflict in the crowded hookah lounge, did not target specific victims, The Sun reported.

No arrests have been made.
