An Alabama man became the 23rd inmate in the state to die from the coronavirus, correction officials said Friday.
The Alabama Department of Corrections said that Christopher Nails tested positive in a postmortem examination, AL.com reported. Nails died Sept. 10, the website reported.
Nails suffered from multiple health issues, according to corrections officials. He originally tested negative for COVID-19 on Aug. 31 and was discharged Sept. 4, AL.com reported.
However, his condition deteriorated and he was readmitted to a hospital six days later.
Nails, who was an inmate at the Hamilton Community Work Center, was serving a 15-year sentence for theft of property in a Fayette County case, according to AL.com.
The ADOC said 409 inmates have tested positive for COVID-19, and 13 cases remain active, according to its dashboard on the coronavirus.
