Coronavirus: Confirmed cases in US top 2.5 million

The coronavirus pandemic continued to spike over the weekend in the United States, as the number of confirmed positive tests topped 2.5 million nationwide.

According to the database compiled by Johns Hopkins University, the United States had at least 2,504,442 confirmed cases of COVID-19 as of Saturday evening and at least 125,472 deaths.

The top 10 counties with confirmed coronavirus cases, not surprisingly, come from metropolitan areas. Los Angeles County leads the way with 93,319 confirmed cases. Cook County in Illinois, which includes the Chicago metropolitan area, was second with 89,068 cases. The next five counties are from the New York metropolitan area -- Queens, Kings, Bronx, Nassau and Suffolk. Westchester County, also in New York is ninth, At No. 10, Miami-Dade County has the most confirmed cases in Florida.

Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and Nevada set new highs in daily cases reported, according to The Washington Post. The Florida Department of Health reported 132,545 cases of COVID-19, marking an additional 9,636 new positive cases.

More than 42,000 new cases were reported nationally by Saturday evening.
