The number of people infected with the virus has steadily risen for weeks and on Thursday there were 77,640 cases, surpassing the 75,723 cases on July 29, according to NBC News. There were also more than 850 deaths.

“Unfortunately, we’re seeing a distressing trend here in the United States, with Covid-19 cases increasing in nearly 75% of the country,” Jay Butler, deputy director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said on Wednesday after multiple days of increasing caseloads.

While treatments have improved, helping to decrease death rates, infection rates across the country continue to mount. Health officials recommend limiting the spread by practicing social distancing measures and wearing a face covering, the Wall Street Journal reported.

There are more than 8.4 million cases in the U.S. and 223,061 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins database.
