Dia de los Muertos: Mattel releases second Barbie doll to honor holiday

Barbie is celebrating the ancestors once again this year.

Mattel recently announced it is releasing a second Barbie doll commemorating Dia de los Muertos, the holiday also known as Day of the Dead, that is celebrated on Nov. 2, ABC News reported.

During Dia de los Muertos families gather to remember their ancestors who have gone before them, celebrating life through music, food, flowers and offerings.

The doll features a light-colored lace dress overlaying a layer of embroidered floral fabric with skeleton accents, ABC News reported. Barbie’s face is decorated in a Calavera style. Her hair is braided atop of her head and decorated with flowers held by skeleton hands, Fox Business reported.

The Dia de Muertos Barbie was designed by Mexican American designer Javier Meabe who drew from his family’s traditions.

“For this doll, I was inspired by the color gold seen throughout Mexican culture, jewelry, buildings, statues and artwork and highlighted it through the design. The roses represent emotions and moments in life including celebrations, birth, death, passion, and love and I was also inspired to introduce new textures and a new dress silhouette,” Meabe said in a statement according to ABC News.

Last year, Mattel released its first Dia de Muertos Barbie that sold out during its first release.

The 2020 Dia de Muertos Barbie will retail for $75 and is being marketed to adult collectors. It will be available at the Barbie online store, as well as, Walmart, Target and Amazon.
