‘Father of the Bride’ cast reunites for coronavirus-inspired segment with Netflix

It’s been 29 years since “Father of the Bride" hit the big screen just days before Christmas in 1991.

The American comedy, featuring Steve Martin, Diane Keaton and Martin Short followed up with a sequel released in 1995, debuting at No. 2 at the box office during it’s premiere weekend.

Writer-director Nancy Meyers said in 1996 that a third movie was in the works, but nothing ever came about. Until now.

The Banks family reunited for a special event shared Friday by Netflix.

The streaming platform released “Father of the Bride Part 3(ish)” on YouTube and Facebook.

In the 26-minute production, the cast reunites for another wedding, that of Kieran Culkin’s character, Matty, who invites the family to a meeting via Zoom.

Sprinkled with coronavirus-related references, family members complain about being holed up, keeping safe and staying sane.

Almost all the familiar faces are present, including Kimberly Williams-Paisley and George Newbern, but this time, Matty’s wife-to-be is introduced to the Banks clan and their fans.

Alexandra Shipp, who appears in the “X-Men” series as Storm, stars as Matty’s fiance, and Robert DeNiro plays her father. The Banks babies born in “Father of the Bride Part II” also appeared as adults by way of newcomers Ben Platt and Florence Pugh.

The reunion was an effort to support non-profit World Central Kitchen, which has provided hundreds of meals to families and frontline workers during the COVID-19 pandemic.
