According to WFTV, Polk County Sheriff’s Deputy Blane Lane, 21, and other deputies responded to Foxtown South early Tuesday to arrest Cheryl Lynn Williams, 46, who was accused of failing to appear on a methamphetamine possession charge. Williams pointed “a very realistic-looking BB gun” at the deputies, who opened fire, striking Williams and Lane, the Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

Lane, who was struck in the shoulder and chest by a bullet from one of the deputies’ guns, later died at a nearby hospital, Sheriff Grady Judd said. Williams also was taken to the hospital, where she remained Tuesday afternoon, according to WFTV. She will face second-degree murder and other charges following her release, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Lane, a Fort Meade resident, joined the force two years ago, WFTV reported. The Sheriff’s Office honored him with a procession Tuesday morning and “will plan a line-of-duty death funeral with full law enforcement honors,” according to the news release.
