Former NFL coach Tom Coughlin recovering after bicycle accident

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Former NFL coach Tom Coughlin fractured four ribs, punctured his lung and needed stitches in his head after a bicycle accident in Jacksonville, Florida, last weekend.

Coughlin, 73, claimed he was blindsided by another man on a racing bike, ESPN reported.

“(He) comes out of nowhere and clips the front of my bike,” Coughlin told the sports network, adding that he thought he was aware of his surroundings until he was hit.

Coughlin originally went home before his family convinced him to go to an emergency room, ESPN reported. Coughlin underwent X-rays and a CT scan, and doctors told him he faces a four- to six-week recovery period, the sports network reported.

Coughlin, the first coach in the history of the Jacksonville Jaguars, guided the NFL franchise from 1995 to 2002, where he went 128-68 during the regular season and 4-4 in the playoffs.

He returned to the Jaguars and was the team’s executive vice president of football operations before he was fired in December, CBS Sports reported. He also was the Jaguars’ general manager and led Jacksonville to the postseason four times during the late 1990s, reaching the AFC Championship Game two times.

Coughlin’s 20-year NFL coaching career is remembered for the 12 seasons he spent leading the New York Giants. Coughlin won a pair of Super Bowl titles with the Giants, defeating the New England Patriots both times. He went 170-150 during the regular season during his NFL coaching career and had a 12-7 mark in the postseason.

Coughlin coached at Boston College for three years in the 1990s, compiling a 22-14 mark and defeating top-ranked Notre Dame in 1993.
