‘The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’ to get reboot as a drama series

A new drama series “Bel-Air” is officially in the works more than a year after Morgan Cooper created a viral trailer reimagining the sitcom as a drama.

Will Smith and Cooper will join forces to adapt “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” into a dramatic take on the popular show that aired from 1990 to 1996.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the hourlong series will focus on the origins of Will Smith’s character and his roots in West Philadelphia. The series will also tackle issues surrounding being a Black man in America today.

In 2019, Cooper breathed new air into the series after creating a fan-film “official trailer” for “Bel Air.”

Cooper is a cinematographer, according to Deadline Hollywood, and his video garnered attention from Smith. Cooper will direct and co-executive produce the series. He is also co-writing with Chris Collins.

Netflix and HBO Max are two of the potential streaming partners that are bidding for the series, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
