Girl, 6, killed in shooting at San Antonio car club meetup; suspect arrested

SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio police arrested a man Monday in connection with the fatal shooting of a 6-year-old girl Sunday night during a car club meetup on the city’s West Side.

Police confirmed Monday afternoon that Andrew Rey Elizondo, 23, was arrested outside his home on suspicion of capital murder in the shooting death of Saryah Perez, KSAT reported.

San Antonio Chief of Police William McManus told the TV station that Elizondo is an acquaintance of the victim’s mother.

Officers were called at around 10:45 p.m. Sunday after gunshots were fired following an unspecified disturbance at an informal gathering of vehicles in the 4000 block of West Commerce Street, KENS reported.

According to the preliminary report released by the police department, Perez was sitting in her car seat when a bullet struck her in the upper torso. She died a short while later at an area hospital, WOAI reported.

Meanwhile, Perez’s mother, who has not been identified publicly, was also grazed in the back by a bullet during the incident, but the extent of her injuries was not immediately clear, KSAT reported.

“It’s a random act by a reckless, heartless individual who could not have cared less where those bullets wound up,” McManus said during a Monday news briefing.

Authorities did not specify what led to the dispute but did confirm that the suspect fired the gunshots as the vehicle drove away, KSAT reported.
