Louisiana dad made his children cook crack cocaine, didn’t report son’s gunshot wound, police say

BATON ROUGE, La. — A Louisiana father and his girlfriend are behind bars after police said he had his young children help him make crack cocaine and cut heroin.

According to the Advocate and WBRZ-TV, Kevin Evans Jr., 36, and Meagan Toney, 29, of Baton Rouge, were arrested Tuesday on charges of child cruelty, contributing to the delinquency of minors, and other drug- and weapons-related offenses. They are being held in the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison, authorities said.

The arrests came nearly a month after Evans' 10-year-old son was shot when someone fired at Evans during a dispute over a drug deal July 6, police said. Instead of calling police, Evans told his three children that he "had to hide his dope," the Advocate reported. After concealing the drugs, Evans took the boy to the hospital, claiming that the child had hurt himself, police said.

The boy’s mother later learned about the shooting and reported it to police July 8, according to the news outlets. During interviews with investigators, the boy and Evans’ other children, who are 8 and 9, said their father made them help him manufacture crack cocaine and cut heroin, the Advocate reported.
