NEW YORK — A New York man is accused of killing his pregnant girlfriend and dumping her body on a New York City highway, authorities said Tuesday.

Goey Charles, 29, of Uniondale, was arrested Monday and charged with second-degree murder in the strangulation death of Vanessa Pierre, 29, of Hempstead, New York, WABC reported. According to her family, Pierre was six months pregnant, the television station reported. Her unborn child could not be saved.

Charles is being held without bail. He was arraigned Tuesday and will appear again in court on Thursday, the Bayside Post reported.

According to the New York City Police Department, Pierre was already dead and face down on the sidewalk when investigators arrived at the scene on the Horace Harding Expressway in Queens, WNBC reported. The NYPD released a video from Friday morning that shows a man they believe to be Charles, removing Pierre’s body from a vehicle and leaving it on the side of the road, according to WNBC.

Pierre had bruises around her neck and a black eye, WABC reported. Police said Pierre was wearing red pajamas, an orange T-shirt and one sock. Gray sweatpants were wrapped around her neck.

“This is a heartbreaking case,” Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz told WABC. “A pregnant woman was allegedly killed by this defendant, the father of her unborn child. Her family is devastated. The defendant is in custody and will answer for his alleged actions.”

According to prosecutors, Charles stopped Pierce’s white 2019 Dodge Challenger on the expressway at about 2:50 a.m., climbed out from behind the wheel and got into the back seat with Pierre, Katz said in a news release.

“And then soon afterwards, all movement stopped and the victim appeared to lay across the backseat motionless,” Katz said in the statement.

At about 4:38 a.m., Charles got out of the car and dragged the woman from the car, Katz said. Charles allegedly drove away about two minutes later.

If convicted, Charles faces 25 years to life in prison, the district attorney’s office said.
