Man faces federal charges for treasure dig at Yellowstone

A Utah man’s quest for treasure has him now answering to federal authorities.

Rodrick Dow Craythorn is facing charges after being accused of digging in Fort Yellowstone Army Cemetery In Yellowstone National Park, the Jackson Hole News and Guide reported.

Craythorn was on a mission to find the treasure that was buried by New Mexico art dealer Forrest Fenn, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said in a news release.

Craythorn was indicted last month by a federal grand jury. He pleaded not guilty this week to the charges of excavating or trafficking in archaeological resources and injury or depredation to United States property, the newspaper reported.

Fenn’s chest of treasure was found in Wyoming earlier this year. Fenn died weeks later, KPVI reported.

Fenn started the treasure hunt a decade ago and offered clues to the location of the box of gold, artifacts and jewels, CNN reported.

Several people died or needed rescuing while on their treasure hunts, the Missoulian reported.
