The accident happened Saturday morning when a man fell near the Old Chute area, KPTV reported.

The first call came in at about 6:30 a.m.

He apparently was climbing up the western face of the mountain when he lost his ice ax and fell down the side, Oregon Live reported.

Crews set up a command center at Timberline Lodge and a rescue team got to the man just before 10:30 a.m.

Members of the Oregon Army National Guard flew a helicopter to the site to evacuate the climber, landing it on a crest of the snowpack around 1 p.m., teetering near the top of the mountain.

The man was taken to an area hospital with serious injuries, KPTV reported.

This is the second climber who had to be rescued from Mount Hood in two weeks.

KIRO reported that a woman lost her footing and her ice ax before she slid 900 feet and crashed into rocks.
