According to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, the state’s first confirmed case of the virus, endemic to west and central Africa, was first detected June 30 in a Dane County resident, who continues to isolate, and confirmed Saturday, WISN-TV reported.

Wisconsin’s last outbreak was in 2003, when health officials confirmed 39 cases statewide, the TV station reported.

Meanwhile, the probable Iowa case was detected Friday and involves a patient from the north-central part of the state who recently traveled internationally, according to KCRG-TV.

Monkeypox typically begins with flu-like symptoms and swelling of the lymph nodes before progressing to a rash on the face and body. Most infections last two to four weeks, KSDK reported.

By 5 p.m. EDT Friday, the CDC had confirmed 460 monkeypox cases across 30 states, Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia.

Per the CDC, “early data suggest that gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men make up a high number of cases. However, anyone who has been in close contact with someone who has monkeypox is at risk.”

To date, California has confirmed the most infections with 95 cases, followed by New York with 90, Illinois with 53 and Florida with 51. Meanwhile, the District of Columbia has confirmed 31 cases; Massachusetts has confirmed 23 cases; Pennsylvania has confirmed 14 cases; Texas has confirmed 12 cases; Georgia and Virginia have each confirmed 11 cases; Colorado and Maryland have each confirmed seven cases; Hawaii, Minnesota and Washington have each confirmed six cases; Utah has confirmed five cases; New Jersey has confirmed four cases; Indiana, Missouri and Ohio have each confirmed three cases; Nevada, North Carolina, Oklahoma and Oregon have each confirmed two cases; and Arizona, Kentucky, Michigan, Nebraska, New Hampshire, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island and Wisconsin have each confirmed one case, according to CDC data.
