Mookie Betts, Dodgers agree to 12-year, $365M extension

LOS ANGELES — Outfielder Mookie Betts and the Los Angeles Dodgers agreed to a 12-year, $365 million contract extension Wednesday.

The deal includes a $65 million signing bonus, the Los Angeles Times reported. Betts will make $10 million during the truncated 2020 major league baseball season.

Betts’ deal is the second-largest in MLB history, topped only by the 12-year, $426.5 million extension Mike Trout signed in 2019 with the Anaheim Angels.

Betts, 27, the 2018 American League MVP and a four-time all-star, was acquired from the Boston Red Sox along with 2012 Cy Young Award winner David Price in February. The Dodgers sent outfielder Alex Verdugo and two prospects to Boston for the two players.

Betts has had four straight seasons with at least 100 runs, 40 doubles and 20 home runs, which is tied with Robinson Cano and Albert Pujols for the longest streak in the expansion era, which began in 1961, according to ESPN.

The Dodgers open their 2020 baseball season Thursday at home against the San Francisco Giants.
