New York Mets 2B Robinson Cano suspended for 2021 season for PED use

New York Mets second baseman Robinson Cano was suspended for the entire 2021 season after testing positive for a performance-enhancing drug, Commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement on Wednesday.

Cano, 38, tested positive for stanozolol, ESPN reported. It is the second time Cano has been suspended for PED use. In 2018, while playing for the Seattle Mariners, Cano missed 80 games after testing positive for a diuretic, MLB.com reported.

The second suspension triggered an automatic 162-game suspension for violating Major League Baseball’s joint drug agreement with the MLB Players Association, ESPN reported. He will lose $24 million in salary, the network reported.

“We were extremely disappointed to be informed about Robinson’s suspension for violating Major League Baseball’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program,” Mets president Sandy Alderson said in a statement. “The violation is very unfortunate for him, the organization, our fans, and the sport. The Mets fully support MLB’s efforts toward eliminating performance enhancing substances from the game.”

Cano batted .316 for the Mets during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, hitting 10 home runs and driving in 30 runs while playing 49 games.
